Course leader: Soil composting expert Alene Tesfamichael​

Course content

1. Presentation and review of the types of waste and organic material that can be used

2. Biology of soil composting, what role do microorganisms and earthworms play in the process

3. Soil habitat requirements – what is favorable temperature, humidity, pH and substrate

4. Design and establishment of a soil compost bin – size, shape and choice of materials

5. Maintenance of the soil compost bin – aeration, humidity, feeding and waste management

6. Use of finished compost – fertilization, soil improvement and pest control

7. Soil composting in the context of sustainability and climate change – reduction of food waste and carbon footprint

The course may also include demonstrations of soil composting techniques and exercises to identify different soil types and their functions in the composting process. It may also include discussions on the challenges and limitations of soil composting, as well as opportunities for further research and innovation in this field.

The course curriculum is adapted to different needs and is provided upon request.
