What is Aquaponics

Aquaponics is simply the combination of raising aquatic animals with cultivation of plants. In other words, the system combines growing plants hydroponically with aquaculture. In this system of aquaponics, nutrients from excretions animals being raised can be used as a nutrition for growing plants. Furthermore, water from the aquaculture system can be used to water theplants in the hydroponic system. What makes the system interesting is that the water is recirculated back to the aquaculture system again.

Currently aquaculture is a common practice in several countries. For that reason the system is very diverse and in some cases complex. The food that can be produced from such a system are primarily aquatic animals and diverse types of plants, specifically vegetables.

As mentioned above, aquaponics consists of two main parts, with the aquaculture part for raising aquatic animals and the hydroponics part for growing plants.
